Translation
English translation In the year of our Lord 1086, the 9th of the indiction, on the 15th day after full moon, a Saturday, the 6th [day before] the Nonae of May, died a distinguished man, Humbertus, his own name, but nicknamed Hugo, provost of this church and the major church in Liège, and archdeacon of Texandria. During his life he established prebendaryships for his brothers. He has restored and expanded the church with a sanctuary, the choir, the crypt, the grave of lord and duke Charles, 3 chapels in the aisles and one chapel on the west side, a vestiary, a chapter house, the convent school and the whole cloister. He has provided the church with solid and new altars, paintwork, a stone arch for SS Monulfus and Gondulfus and also their grave in the middle of the church, reliquaries, chasubles, cassocks, the major censer and its incense and other utensils. He has had constructed and decorated the ciborium which is behind the altar of St Servatius. Thís is most regrettable that – since his death prevents this – he could not complete the work he had started.
