Arguments
  • the memorial object is still in the original institution
Specification The tomb is located in the family chapel, which was founded by Reinoud III van Brederode. It was placed upon the tomb vault which remained in use until 1679. Also a retable is left in the chapel, in which little portraits of Reinoud and Philippote and their children are shown. The chapel is isolated from the rest of the church by a roodscreen, on which an inscription about the Van Vianen en Van Brederode families is written.

Argumentation Reinoud III van Brederode founded the family chapel, which is situated to the north of the choir, after the church was destroyed by fire in 1540

Additional remarks (original location) All three effigies on the tomb are looking towards the retable, to the east. Buchelius mentions also a stained glass window, commissioned by cardinal De Granvelle, brother in law of Helena, the daughter of Reinoud III van Brederode. There is also a weapon in the vault of the family chapel, placed by Wolfert van Brederode, the last male heir, in 1679.

Specification The two tables are made of Meuse limestone. The sculptures at the heads and the feet of the couple (socles, angels and torches) are made of Avesnes stone which was quarried in Avesnes-le-Sec, a small town near Cambrai. The effigies of the couple, the cadaver effigy, the putti and the square pillars are made of Baumberger stone from Germany. Some parts of the tomb are made of wood: the wings of the putti and the angels, the mouthpieces of the trumpets/torches held by the putti, the flames of the torches held by the angels and the 12 baluster columns.

Completeness More or less complete. Some parts are not original anymore.
Condition Not in good condition: some protruding parts as noses, toes and wings, are broken. Wire and plaster, intended to hold these parts, are visible.
Conservation Previous restorations have left their traces. The layer of white painting of the restoration of 1828 has been removed in 1877. In the latter year the remaining parts of the original polychromy disappeared as well.

Specification The original columns of the fence which surrounds the tomb, were made of stone. They were replaced by wooden ones around 1909. In the mid-17th century, a wooden canopy was placed over the tomb, probably designed by Jacob van Campen. Some scholars think that the flames upon the torches held by the angels, are not original (perhaps the torches held real candles?). During a restoration in the 19th century there were mouthpieces added to the torches of the putti, turning them into trumpets. Moreover, the two putti with the heraldic shields of Van der Marck and Van Borselen have changed places between 1840 and 1844. During the restoration of 1877 old and new layers of paint were removed.

Description of the decoration(s) At the heads and the feet of the effigies there is a sculpture. Both sculptures are very similar. At the bottom there is a large socle, of which the outer side is decorated by a satyr head and drapery, a fruit bowl ending in two lion heads below. On the inner sides of these socles you see two roundels with the heads of a man and a woman, a satyr head and fruits in between. Upon each large socle there are two angels, standing on either side of a smaller socle with a torch. The torch, decorated by foliage and supported by the hands of the angels, is a symbol of life after death. Each small socle is decorated by two herms, one on the front and one on the rear side. On either side of the large socles there is an ornament consisting of a volute, decorated by foliage, ending in the upper body of a woman. At each corner of the upper part of the tomb there is a kneeling putto, holding a heraldic shield and an inverted torch, which is a symbol of death.

Additional remarks Philippote van der Marck was a daughter of Robert II van der Marck, Lord of Sedan, and Catharina de Croy, a descendant of one of the most powerful families of the Southern Netherlands. She married Reinoud III of Brederode in (February) 1521. Before her marriage Philippote was a lady-in-waiting for Margaret of Austria. She must have known the later emperor Charles V very well, because Charles was raised at the court of his aunt Margaret. Reinoud and Philippote had ten children: five sons and five daughters. When Philippote died, in 1537, she was buried in the church of Vianen, in an old tomb vault under the main choir. When the new vault in the family chapel was finished (1540-1542), her remains were transferred to the new grave.
