Original function A cenotaph. The body of Joris van Egmond was buried in Saint-Amand Abbey (north of France); his heart was placed in a shrine in the St. Maartenskerk/Domkerk (St Martin's Church/Dom Church) in Utrecht. During a ceremony on 7 October 1559, two priests - preceded by twelve choristers - carried the shrine with Joris van Egmond's heart from the Bisschopshof (episcopal palace) to the St. Maartenskerk/Domkerk, where the shrine was probably placed in the space between the two slabs.

Additional remarks Joris van Egmond had the monument placed in 1549, ten years before his death in 1559. The text of his deed of foundation of 1548 was inscribed in the monument. Thus, Joris van Egmond took care of the salvation of his soul while he was still alive. For further information on the deed of foundation, see Additional Remarks.
Material(s)
  • stone
Specification black marble (lower slab); red veined marble (short pillars); black Namur stone (upper slab); blue limestone (base); sandstone (triumphal arch).
Traces of polychromy? Polychromed triumphal arch: the original polychromy consisted of black paint and gilding. Other colours can be seen on the heraldry
Reuse of older objects
Dimensions (cm)
Height x width x depth 410 x 225 x 0
Completeness Incomplete: it is assumed that the monument originally included an effigy, showing Joris van Egmond kneeling in the direction of the sacrament house. The effigy of the bishop was probably placed on the upper slab. The shrine containing the bishop's heart is also missing.
Condition In reasonable condition
Conservation • The monument was restored twice in the 20th century. In 1908, the monument was restored with the help of an old drawing. The cornice was missing, only some fragments of the frieze remained and pieces of the architrave were missing as well. • The restoration of the grotesques was poorly-executed: the gilded grotesques were retouched with ochre paint. The restorer felt that one should be able to see the difference between the original and restored parts.

Additional remarks
Additional remarks The extensive inscription is a copy of a foundation charter (1548): a Mass in honour of the Blessed Sacrament was to be celebrated perpetually on the first thursday of every month to benefit the soul of the bishop. During his life, Joris van Egmond displayed a special veneration for the Blessed Sacrament. A receipt of 1552 mentions that Joris van Egmond donated the sum of 3500 Carolus guilders; the chapter had to spend 140 guilders annually on fees for attending the Masses founded by the bishop.

Translation
English translation Foundation of the most reverend Joris van Egmond, bishop of Utrecht I, Joris van Egmond, by the mercy and grace of the Almighty God bishop of Utrecht, am founding in the honour of the three times holy and supremely blessed eucharist, which all creatures must venerate, a perpetual mass in the cathedral church of Utrecht, which has to celebrated every first Thursday of every month in the year, to the salvation of my soul and the increase of the devotion of the believing people, on subsequent conditions: In the first place I want this mass to be celebrated on the high altar of the cathedral church with the same ceremonies as customarily are applied to the celebration of triple feasts in the same cathedral, with the exception of the offertory. This mass will be celebrated ath the seventh hour during the period from the first Thursday after Candlemas till the first Thursday in the month of December, in the remaining period at half past seven. Before, however, the bell called Salvator will be rung during a quarter of an hour. This mass will be celebrated by the suffragan of Utrecht, and when he is absent or prevented from attending, by a canon enjoying a prebend of this same church. The deacon, the subdeacon and the provisors singing the Alleluia or a tract likewise will be canons possessing a prebend in the same church. He who is going to celebrate this mass, will transfer the venerable sacrament from the sacristy to the high altar, dressed in priestly vestments. When he has arrived at the altar, the choir will sing: ‘O salutary host, which opens widely the door of heaven, hostile wars are pressing upon us, give strength and bring help’. When mass has been sung, the priest will give the benediction with the venerable sacrament, while the choir is singing: ‘Christ our defender, look upon us, keep down those who lay snares for us, preserve your servants whom You have bought with your blood’. After the benediction has been given with the venerable sacrament, the choir with pitched voice will recite Psalm 145: ‘Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord during my lifetime etc’. When this has been finished, the priest will say with intense voice, standing at the altar: ‘Save your servant’, to which the choir replies: ‘My God, him who is putting his hope in You’. The priest again: ‘Send him help from the sanctuary’. The choir: ‘And protect him from Sion’. The priest: ‘Lord, hear my prayer’. The choir: ‘And may my clamour come unto You’. The priest: ‘The Lord be with you. And let us pray: ‘God, shepherd and director of all believers, look favourably at your servant Joris, whom You have wanted to be a shepherd at the head of your church. Give him, we beseech You, that the word and the example with which he gives guidance may be profitable such that he may come to eternal life, together with the flock entrusted to his care, through the Lord Christ’’. After my death, instead of Psalm 145 the choir will recite Psalm 50: ‘God, have mercy upon me’, with the Psalm From the depths, with the clausula ‘Eternal rest’, with the versicles which use to be sung for the deceased, and with the following prayer: ‘Give o Lord, we beseech You, that you join the soul of your servant Joris, our priest, whom you have liberated from the laborious struggle of this world, with the assembly of your saints to be their fellow, through the Lord’. In order that this perpetual mass be sung each first Thursday of every month in the year, I found, give and arrange a rent of hundred and forty Carolus guilders, which, if divided over the twelf months, constitute a sum of eleven guilders thirteen stuivers and slightly more each month, which I want to be distributed every month when this mass is sung in the following manner:

Those prelates and canons who are present will divide the money of the absent prelates and canons equally among them. The attendance money of absent vicars will be divided equally by the remaining vicars. Such and in the same manner will be done in the case of the subcantors, the rodbearers and the choirboys who are absent, whose attendance money those who are present will divide equally among them. If the bishop of Utrecht will not be present in the office of the aforementioned mass, it is my wish that his attendance money will be divided among the vicars, in order that they may pray more fervently for their absent bishop. I aso want that no member of this church who is bound by duty (to be present) will partake in the aforesaid distributions unless he be devoutly present in the high choir before the choir starts singing: ‘Salutary host’, and provided he remain so long without once leaving until the celebrating priest after the completion of the last collect for the bishop alive or deceased withdraws to the sacristy. After having received the money from me or from the executors of my testament for the perpetual observation of the aforesaid mass, the chapter of the main church of Utrecht will be obliged to issue a deed sealed with the ordinary seal of the chapter that the indicated rents purchased for this purpose will never be redeemable, and a copy of this deed will be kept by me. The sealed deed itself will be entrusted to the custory of the magistracy of Utrecht to be deposed in the city archives, in order that for the occasion – which God forbid – that this pious institution will not be observed duly or will be interrupted, at least the magistracy of the city of Utrecht will convert the aforesaid annual rents to the use and support of the general poor orphans. Meanwhile, as long as the mass will be celebrated with the aforementioned sum of rents, I will take care that the distribution be done by my vicar-general, and after I will have legated the money by testament I wish this my foundation nonetheless to be unbreakable and to sort its due effect as has been ordinated.
