Condition
Conservation The stained-glass windows of the Jacobskerk suffered extensive damage over the centuries due to storms, vandalism and children throwing balls. After several repairs and additions, it was decided in 1880 to assemble the fragments of the window of Charles V and the window of the Hofkapel canons into one window. In 1914, the two windows were restored/reconstructed by J.L. Schouten. Since the Gemeentemuseum of The Hague was in possession of a box of fragments of the window of Charles V, it was not necessary to use a lot of new glass. The upper section of the window has been restored, the missing lower section has been reconstructed.

Additional remarks
Additional remarks • Charles V visited The Hague six months after the large church fire of 1539, on which occasion he promised to provide the Jacobskerk with a new stained-glass window. Prominent magistrates, clergymen and noblemen soon followed the emperor's example. Today, only two of the original 16th-century stained-glass windows remain: the window of Charles V and the window that was donated by the canons of the chapter of the Hofkapel in The Hague, see MeMO Memorial Object ID 3012. • The sixteen quartered shields of Charles V are depicted in the reconstructed lower section. • The opened bible on the prie-dieu shows the first verses of the Gospel of John in Spanish: "En el principio era la palabra" (In the beginning was the Word).
