Phases in the institutional history It is reported that in 765 a small church was founded by St Lebuinus and St Marcellinus. This church was destroyed many times. It is said that St Ludger rebuilt the St Michael's Church twice (773 and 781). Bishop Bernulphus confirmed St Michaël's Church as a parish church in 1040 and donated it to Lebuinus's Collegiate Church in Deventer.

Short history of the building stages 1370: Start of the construction of the current hall church. 1350-1400: Construction of the three choirs (middle choir devoted to St Michael, northern choir to Our Lady and southern choir to St Peter). 1406-1443: Construction of the tower. 1452: Construction of the nave. 1464: Construction of the late Gothic northern portal (never completely finished). <1600: Several buildings were added in the sixteenth century. 1682: Devastation of the tower due to lightning . 1686-1688: Construction of the consistory at the place of the fifteenth century tower. 1719-1720: Construction of the sandstone southern portal (earlier entrance to the cemetery). 1882-1896, 1966: Restoration.
Additional remarks The fifteenth century tower was the highest tower in the Low Countries until it was destroyed due to lightning strokes (1548, 1606 and 1669). Part of the inventory are various fifteenth century wall and vault paintings, several old memorial tablets and floor slabs. For example in memory of Cornelis van Meckeren (†1584) and painter Gerard ter Borch (†1681). Also part of the inventory is a rood screen (1597), a pulpit (1617-1622), a chandelier (1636), a clock (1683; St Michael's clock) and a church organ made by the brothers Schnitger (1719-1721; organ case Jurriën Westerman).
