Phases in the institutional history Archaeological excavations brought vestiges of a tenth century wooden church to light. Since 1134 the right of collation of St Gudula's Church belonged to the chapter of St Walburgis at Zutphen.

Short history of the building stages <1200: The oldest parts of the current church are in the nave (pillars; twelfth century). 1400: The current choir and transept were constructed around 1400. The original side chapel was replaced by a consistory in the seventeenth century. 1478: Construction of the tower (bottom three sections). 1543: After a city fire the current hall church was constructed. During this building stage the side choir was constructed and the tower was enlarged. 1903: Restoration of the tower. 1973-1976: Restoration of the church.
Additional remarks Part of the inventory are fifteenth and sixteenth century wall paintings, various memorial tombstones (for example in memory of Kunnegonde van Haeften van Verwolde; †1592), a pulpit (1688), a baptismal font (eighteenth century), an organ constructed in 1758 by J.T. Gilman and an organ made by G.H. Quellhorst (1807). The two oldest bells were constructed by Henrick Wegewaert (1622) and Gerhart Schimmel (1687).
