Additional remarks In view of his surname, which means 'goldsmith' in Dutch, Claes may have been a goldsmith. According to Ten Dam, he may have been murdered during a jouney when he visited an inn. It is, however, more likely that the man was an innkeeper, seeing that the inscription on his memorial cross mentions that he was murdered by 'his guests'.
