Additional remarks
Additional remarks • In view of the text inscribed on the band below the wall painting, it is likely that the image served to commemorate the married couple. There appear to have been other inscriptions - written in very small letters - immediately below the wall painting. These inscriptions are no longer legible. • In 1550, Joost van Bemmel tot Bemmel had the chapel built in which the wall painting is located. There are three possible explanations for the division of the wall painting: 1) The window that currently divides the wall painting was installed after the wall painting was made; 2) The window originally contained stained glass which together with the wall painting formed an iconographical unity. This may also account for the arrangement of the devotional portraits; 3) An altar was placed below the window. The portrayed persons were originally kneeling in the direction of the altar. Outside the Netherlands, a similar orientation towards an altar can especially be found in ensembles of stained-glass windows.
