Original function |
According to tradition, the medallion was part of a tomb monument, which was destroyed in 1795. Steensma/Kroesen (2008/2011) interpret the object as a funerary hatchment, being similar to German hatchments of the early sixteenth century. The latter, however, were made of wood.
