Additional remarks Infrared reflectography has shown that the wings were initially left unpainted; they were merely covered with a layer of dark paint. The portraits and landscape on the wings were painted later, by a different hand than that of the central panel.

Additional remarks The carnation is a symbol of Christ's Passion and Resurrection. Furthermore, the flower symbolizes faithfulness in the marriage. It has therefore been suggested that the triptych was made on the occasion of the engagement or marriage of the portrayed persons.
