English translation | Murderous art thou, o death, and grim, horribly gnawing life of man. So are you coming to snatch the rose from our hat. Hastily you have chased off our brother. In nard’s bower he was exalted in honour. I hope that now his virtue will be to his profit, therefore pray to God for Mathys van der Straten. On the last day in the 52th year when 1500 was written – listen to my story - did his soul depart naturally and clearly. Frequently was seen in these quarters a fine mercurialist, eloquent in language. He was living chivalrously beyond measure, therefore pray to God for Mathys van der Straten. Will not the brothers of St Mary Magdalene fall in mourning at the loss of such an upright man, and will they not weep? Yes I think so, and otherwise you may reproach me (??) And you who cannot weep, show nonetheless your kindheartedness and in charity pour out your supplication, praying now for Mathys van der Straten. |

Argumentation | the person is being commemorated |
Additional remarks | |
Additional remarks | • Memorial text including an appeal to the viewer for prayer for the commemorated person. • The epigram on the text panel reads the acrostic: MATHIIS VANDERS STRATEN. • The letters to the utmost right and left are difficult to read because of discolouration. The words between ^xxx^ at the end of some lines were written in a smaller type due to lack of space. • Nard, the emblem of the Chamber of Rhetoric, is the plant from which the oil is produced with which Mary Magdalene anointed Christ’s feet six days before his funeral (John 12). A mercurialist is a person under the influence of the planet Mercury and therefore deemed to be eloquent and resourceful. |
