Condition In rather poor condition due to poor preservation and poorly executed restorations. The painting shows extensive overpainting of inscriptions and portraits. The portrait of Jan van Scorel for instance has been completely overpainted.
Conservation Portraits and inscriptions were overpainted during three restorations, successively executed by Isaac Willaerts in 1667 (Utrecht), Christiaan Kramm in 1837 (Utrecht) and Alois Hauser in 1899-1902 (Berlin). The latter restorer also cradled the panel. The painting was last restored in 1955 by J.C. Traas (Leidschendam), who cleaned, inpainted and varnished the panel and removed some of the overpaintings.

Additional remarks
Additional remarks • The portrayed persons went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land between 1463 and 1525. Their three-quarter portraits are placed against a green background. Members of the clergy lead the procession because of their higher degree of status. • Some inscriptions are written in the first person while others are not, which may imply that the texts were copied from other portraits containing inscriptions. The only date of death mentioned in the inscriptions is that of Jan van der Borch (1509, second person from the left). The rest of the pilgrims were still alive when this work was made. • This panel is part of a series of five panels showing the portraits of Jerusalem Pilgrims, which presumably all were housed in the confraternity's chapel in Utrecht, see also MeMO Memorial Object IDs 670, 671, 672 and 716.
