Conservation |
Whitewashed in the late 16th century and uncovered three centuries later, during the restoration of the church. Heavily restored and retouched: it is unclear which parts of the painting are still original. According to Hoogewerff (1936), the open book at St Bavo's feet is the result of a restoration: it would originally have depicted a cart, one of the saint's attributes.
