Additional remarks
Additional remarks • This series consists of nineteen panels. The first panel depicts a herald holding a text banner in which the County of Holland is presented to the viewer. The following seventeen panels show the portraits of counts and countesses, from Dirk I (10th century) up to Maximiliaan I (late 15th/early 16th century). Fifteen of the seventeen panels each contain two portraits; two panels contain one portrait. Each portrait is accompanied by a short biography along the bottom of the panel. The series is concluded with a panel depicting the figure of Death. • The motive behind the commissioning of this series might have been the political situation in Holland, which necessitated a tribute to the reigning royal house. The portrayed persons are successive rulers.
