Additional remarks
Additional remarks • According to legend, a bleeding host was found in the peat soil of Niervaart (present-day Klundert) around 1300. The host was then kept in the church of Niervaart, attracting many pilgrims. Due to floodings Niervaart became inaccessible and could no longer serve as a place of pilgrimage. In 1449, the host was transferred to the Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Our Lady's Church) in Breda. The painting depicts scenes from the legend and the relocation of the host. • The painting originally comprised ten panels. The inscriptions below the scenes were transcribed in a manuscript of the confraternity. Thanks to this manuscript, we can reconstruct which scenes were depicted in the three lost panels, namely: the discovery of the miraculous host, the investigation of its authenticity by Macharius, and John IV, Count of Nassau, asking the bishop of Liege for permission to relocate the host to Breda. For information on the lost inscriptions, see Van Wezel (2003), p. 286-289.

Additional remarks
Additional remarks The lower right panel shows half of the original scene and therefore has parts of the inscription missing. The inscriptions are preserved in a manuscript belonging to the confraternity (folio 26 verso), through which the missing first verse and the missing part of the second verse are known today, although possibly in slightly different versions: "Op die Nieuvaert tSacrament ontfangen/ Keerden sij weder om met blijden geest/ Een dalder booste weer om tvolc te verstrange[n]/ Rees van stonden aen op noit sulc tempeest/ Dies si allen ter doot toe waren bevreest Joncker Jan graef tot Nassau in sinen persone/ Met hem die geestelicheit twas Baudime/ Ende oic joffrou Mari die bloem van Lone/ Ontfinghent devotelick sonder oxune/ In processien gaende tgeheel commune".
