Completeness The sculpture was probably dismantled after the Reformation. Its parts were put together again in the 19th century, before 1837. It is unclear whether the architectural elements are in its right (original) place. It is, however, certain that the devotional portraits were placed in the outer niches, facing the religious scene. Seven male figures and five female figures have been preserved, albeit damaged. The photo on the left shows a reconstruction of the arrangement of the portraits (the figures are not attached to the sculpture). Little remains of the religious scene: the resurrected Christ is lost, only the open tomb is still present.
Condition
Conservation The hardstone plate on which the portraits are placed - above the predella - is a later addition. Restorations in 1876-1877and in the early 20th century.

Additional remarks Philippote van der Marck was a daughter of Robert II van der Marck, Lord of Sedan, and Catharina de Croy, a descendant of one of the most powerful families of the Southern Netherlands. She married Reinoud III of Brederode in (February) 1521. Before her marriage Philippote was a lady-in-waiting for Margaret of Austria. She must have known the later emperor Charles V very well, because Charles was raised at the court of his aunt Margaret. Reinoud and Philippote had ten children: five sons and five daughters. When Philippote died, in 1537, she was buried in the church of Vianen, in an old tomb vault under the main choir. When the new vault in the family chapel was finished (1540-1542), her remains were transferred to the new grave.
