General information on the institution

Name and ID

Enter the Dutch name of the religious or ecclesiastical community/institution on which you wish to find information. Alternative names are also provided for, such as St. Maartenskerk (Domkerk). When entering ‘Sint’ before a name, abbreviate to ‘St.’. If you are uncertain about the name, search using the search fields patron saint and Location/Settlement.

Enter an English translation of the name of the religious or ecclesiastical community/institution on which you wish to find information. Type of institution

This field allows you to search for a specific type of religious or ecclesiastical community/institution, according to the following classification:
  • Chapel
  • Chapter (collegiate church)
  • Corporation (e.g. confraternity, guild)
  • Monastery, convent or religious house
  • Hospital or orphanage
  • Parish

Note that parish churches that also contained a chapter may be listed under chapter. See also Institutions, section 6.1.

Location (according to current geography)

To restrict your search to the religious or ecclesiastical community/institution from a Dutch province (according to the current geographical borders), enter the name of that province here, e.g. Friesland, Gelderland, or Noord-Brabant. The current geopolitical structure of the provinces is used to avoid any misconception concerning any past changes to the geo-political borders. For instance, a county may have become a Duchy, or a part of a county may have switched to another over the course of time.

Enter the name of the city, town or village where the original institution was located.

Ecclesiastical hierarchy

Select the (medieval) diocese (i.e. administrative territorial unit administered by a bishop) to which the community/institution on which you wish to find information belonged before 1559. This is the year when the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the Low Countries and parts of Germany was officially reorganised.

You may use > and < to restrict your search to institutions that were founded after or before the entered date, for instance ‘>1430’ to search for institutions that were founded after 1430. It is also possible to approximate the date by adding ‘ca.’. Note that ca. must not be followed by a space, but directly by the year, as in ‘ca.1391’.
