Additional remarks |
Original function | According to tradition, the medallion was part of a tomb monument which was destroyed in 1795. Steensma and Kroesen (2008/2011), however, interpret the object as a funerary hatchment. This claim is supported by the presence of two very similar stone medallions in the church of St Bartholomew in Dornum (1549 and 1554). These two medallions - like the one in Appingedam - show the arms of the Kankema family. Gerdt tho Dornum unde Withmunde was married to Almuth Kankena: it appears the medallions followed a certain (family) tradition. |
