Additional remarks (original location) |
Thought to have been originally located in Leiden, for instance in St Anthony's Hospital or in St Peter's Church, where the Confraternity of St Anthony had an altar. The latter is known to have been adorned with an altarpiece showing carved figures and painted wings, see Bruyn (1960). |
Function |
|
---|---|
Specification | • Possibly the wing of a memorial diptych/triptych/polyptych that functioned as an altarpiece. • No information is available about possible other functions: the complete composition of the presumed ensemble is unknown; memorial text(s) may be missing. Traces of polychromy? | |
Reuse of older objects | |
Completeness | Most likely two fragments of a larger painting: the pair of folded hands that is visible on the far left of the Brussels panel appears to belong to the man on the Madrid panel. Furthermore, there are similarities in background, scale, technique and the use of colour. The original painting may have been part of an ensemble that also included the 'Calling of St Anthony' in Amsterdam (see MeMO memorial object ID 730). All three panels show the same style. |
